Suspension 101

Need-to-know suspension facts

Types of Suspension: E-bikes can have different types of suspension systems, including front suspension (fork), rear suspension (shock), or a combination of both (full suspension). Each type offers different advantages and is suitable for specific riding conditions.

Front Suspension (Fork): Front suspension forks are designed to absorb impacts and vibrations from the front wheel, providing a smoother and more controlled ride. They are commonly found on e-bikes designed for off-road or rough terrain riding.

Rear Suspension (Shock): Rear suspension systems, also known as shocks, are designed to absorb bumps and impacts from the rear wheel. They enhance traction, comfort, and control, particularly on uneven or technical terrain. Rear suspension is often found on e-bikes built for more aggressive trail riding or downhill riding.

Full Suspension: Full suspension e-bikes feature both front and rear suspension systems, offering the highest level of comfort, control, and performance. They excel in handling rough trails and challenging terrain, providing improved traction and stability.

Suspension Travel: Suspension travel refers to the distance the suspension fork or shock can compress and extend. It is usually measured in millimeters (mm). More travel generally means the suspension can handle larger impacts and rougher terrain. However, it's essential to match the suspension travel to your riding style and intended terrain.

Adjustability: Some e-bike suspensions offer adjustability in terms of compression, rebound, and lockout. These adjustments allow you to fine-tune the suspension's performance based on your weight, riding style, and trail conditions.

Maintenance: Suspension systems require regular maintenance to ensure optimal performance and longevity. This may include cleaning, lubrication, and periodic inspection of seals, bushings, and air pressure (if applicable). Following the manufacturer's maintenance guidelines is crucial
